What this sector actually is
How to read the numbers on this page
No major EPC publishes GET CTC; all pay bands are crowd-reported estimates (Glassdoor/Indeed, samples noted). Program costs for the higher-studies forks are official (fee PDFs, scholarship terms). The safety and work-culture claims cite dated studies and news — including the parts the industry does not brochure.
Who should NOT pick core civil
- You are not prepared for site postings. Entry means remote project locations, 6-day weeks (documented sector norm), camp/township living and transfers on project timelines. The desk tracks exist but are earned or specialized into — they are not the default first posting.
- You need metro-city life and fast money simultaneously. Site pay premiums partially offset location, but the ₹3–6L entry band with slow early increments is the reality; the sector pays patience, not speed.
- You would enter through the ₹15–20k contractor layer without a plan. Small-contractor site roles teach real execution but stagnate on third-party payrolls with 20–25% sector attrition around you. Enter that layer only as a deliberate 12–18 month bridge with an exit exam/skill plan running in parallel.
- Safety culture matters to you and you will not push it. Construction is India’s deadliest sector (~38 fatal accidents/day per the IIT Delhi study, 2019 data, widely acknowledged as under-reported). Good employers manage it seriously; bad ones normalize it. Factor employer safety culture into offers like salary.
- You are choosing it only because "government job later" — without checking the odds. The PWD/PSU exam route is real but brutally competitive (see our Govt & PSU roadmap for the published ratios); private-sector civil must stand on its own in your plan.
Is core civil actually a fit for you?
Five honest self-checks, flipped from the reasons people quit this sector. Answer truthfully — every one must pass for core civil to be a clean fit rather than a mistake you discover on site.
1. Are you prepared for the first postings this sector actually gives?
Entry means remote project locations, 6-day weeks, camp/township living and transfers on project timelines. Desk tracks are earned into, not the default first posting.
2. Can you accept slow early money in exchange for a funded, needed profession?
The ₹3–6L entry band with slow early increments is the reality; the sector pays patience, not speed.
3. If you entered the ₹15–20k contractor layer, would you have a written exit plan?
Small-contractor roles teach real execution but stagnate on third-party payrolls. Enter only as a deliberate 12–18 month bridge with an exit exam/skill plan running in parallel.
4. Will you treat employer safety culture as seriously as salary — and push on it?
Construction is India’s deadliest sector. Good employers manage it; bad ones normalize it. You have to factor it into offers and not stay silent.
5. Does private-sector civil stand on its own in your plan — not just as a placeholder for a government exam?
The PWD/PSU exam route is real but brutally competitive. Private-sector civil must be a genuine choice, not a waiting room.

The doors — with honest numbers
GET at tier-1 EPCs
L&T Construction · Tata Projects · Shapoorji · Afcons · KEC
Structured rotation across execution, QS and planning at real mega-projects. L&T recruits overwhelmingly on-campus — engage your TPO in pre-final year; off-campus windows are rarer than in IT.
First skills: Surveying + levels (they test it) · Bar bending schedules · AutoCAD · Site Hindi/local language
QS / Billing / Planning (the desk tracks)
Quantity Surveyor · Billing Engineer · Planning Engineer (Primavera)
The best-kept secret in civil: measurement, rate analysis, claims and cost control — office-based, mega-project-relevant, and chronically short of good people. Starts like site pay, out-earns it by mid-career.
First skills: Quantity takeoff · Rate analysis (DSR + market) · Excel deeply · MS Project/Primavera
BIM / construction-tech roles
BIM Modeler → Coordinator — the skills-shortage door
Revit/Navisworks modeling and clash coordination — the rare civil entry that is metro-based, export-connected, and hires on a demonstrable skill (our Civil idea bank’s BIM project is exactly the portfolio piece).
First skills: Revit properly · Drawing literacy · Navisworks basics
The higher-studies forks (official costs)
M.Tech (GATE) · L&T Build India · NICMAR · RICS SBE
Civil is the branch where structured PG genuinely re-prices you — structural design gates on M.Tech, construction management gates on NICMAR/RICS-class programs. Run the fees-vs-outcome math with the official numbers here, not brochure averages.
First skills: GATE CE prep · Or CAT-style prep for NICMAR · 70%+ for Build India eligibility

Honest realities — what the evidence says
| Reality | What the evidence shows |
|---|---|
| Site life | 6-day weeks are the documented norm; personal-time complaints are public and recurring (news-covered); sector attrition runs 20–25%/year with role stress linked to exit intent in peer-reviewed study. It is a real life with real compensations — go in with eyes open, not brochure expectations. |
| Safety | India’s deadliest sector: ~38 fatal accidents/day and ~80% of sites rated unsafe (IIT Delhi study, 2019 data, acknowledged under-reporting). Tier-1 EPCs run materially better safety systems than the contractor layer — one more reason the entry gate matters. |
| The two-layer economy | ₹12–18k/month site supervisors (small contractors, often third-party payroll) work beside ₹4–6L GETs. No official split is published; the aggregates make the gap unmistakable. Walk-in offers deserve the question: whose payroll, what conversion policy, in writing. |
| The funded boom is real | Capex ₹2 lakh crore (2014-15) → ₹12.2 lakh crore (2026-27 budget); construction hiring-intent growth ~34% in recent surveys. Civil demand is not the problem — the distribution of its quality is. |
| The drift | No published percentage for civil-to-IT/abroad exits (we checked); proxies: 7.5% core-employability share, 20–25% attrition, pay-cut-for-balance findings in retention studies. The QS/BIM/planning desk tracks are the underused middle path between site life and leaving the field entirely. |

Certificates: mostly skip, with two exceptions
The ₹30–80k "job-guaranteed" CAD/QS diplomas teach software you can learn on student licenses (fee sheets documented in Sources); interviews test the takeoff and the drawing, not the institute paper. The two spends that genuinely reprice civil students: structured PG (the official-cost forks above) and demonstrable BIM skill (Revit student license is free — the portfolio is the credential). NPTEL’s ₹1,000 proctored courses cover the theory gaps.
