How to read the numbers on this page
“Sourced” figures link to official notifications, signed settlements or government PDFs we read directly (the SSC CGL 2026 notice, GAIL and PGCIL advertisements, the 12th Bipartite Settlement). “Estimate” marks derived or reported figures — gross salaries computed from official basic + DA 60% + HRA 30%, coaching-site CTC claims, and community-reported data. Exam rules change EVERY cycle: always confirm against the current official notification before applying.
Who should NOT pick the government-exam path
- You need income within a year. Average preparation time among serious aspirants is 2 years 10 months (Reporters Collective, 2024) — and a single cycle from notification to joining runs 12–18 months even when you succeed.
- You are starting at 25+ without a job. The age-window math is unforgiving: a general-category graduate starting at 25–26 has perhaps 4–5 banking cycles left (cap 30) and has already lost the SSC posts capped at 27. Starting at 21–22 nearly doubles your attempts.
- You cannot name your exit ramp. Peer-reviewed research on Indian exam cohorts found those locked into prolonged attempts had lower employment and earnings a decade later. If you cannot write down "after attempt N or age X, I switch to ___", you are not choosing this path — you are drifting into it.
- You are escaping a private-sector job you hate, without actually liking study. This path is 25+ hours of disciplined weekly study for years. Escaping TO something you do not want is the most expensive mistake in this sector.
- You refuse to prepare while employed or enrolled. The aspirants who survive failure are the ones who kept a degree, a job or a skill alive alongside — full-time unemployed preparation is the highest-risk configuration (and the one exam-hub economies profit from).

Desk roles across tax, audit, ministries and enforcement. Any bachelor’s degree, ₹100 application fee (free for women/SC/ST/PwBD), no attempt cap — only age caps per post group (18–27 up to 18–32).

Branch operations, credit, customer-facing work with real targets and transfer liability. Any degree; age 20–30 (IBPS PO); no IBPS attempt cap, SBI caps at 6 Mains attempts (general). IBPS PO 2026: 6,715 vacancies, a 5-year high.

The best-paid door in this sector — plant/project engineering with housing and perks. But: B.E/B.Tech in notified branches only, ~65% degree cutoffs, tight age caps (GAIL 26, PGCIL 28), service bonds (₹5L at PGCIL/NTPC), and brutal conversion: ~8 lakh GATE candidates chase roughly 2,000–3,000 PSU seats a year (estimate).

Railways — RRB NTPC graduate posts
Station Master · Goods Train Manager · Sr. Clerk · Jr. Account Assistant
Operational railway roles, any degree, posted anywhere in the zone. Last cycle: 5,810 graduate vacancies. Historical competition is the worst on this page — the 2019 cycle drew 1.26 crore applications for 35,208 posts (~359 per seat).

TNPSC (Tamil Nadu state services)
Group 1 (Dy. Collector/DSP) · Group 2/2A · Group 4 (Jr. Asst/VAO)
Serve in Tamil Nadu, in Tamil. 2026 planner: Group 1 notified 23 Jun 2026, Group 2/2A due 11 Aug 2026, Group 4 due 6 Oct 2026. A compulsory Class-10-standard Tamil paper (min 40%) gates EVERY exam. Structural advantage: no upper age limit for SC/ST/MBC/BC categories on most posts (general capped at 32).

Gross salaries marked estimate are computed from official basics + DA 60% (official rate from 01-01-2026) + HRA 30% (X-class city); in-hand is lower after NPS/CGHS deductions. The 8th Pay Commission (constituted Nov 2025, reference date 01-01-2026) will revise central-government figures — expect arrears rather than fast implementation.
The aspirant-to-officer timeline — honestly
Choose at most two compatible exam families (SSC+banking share a core; TNPSC adds Tamil; GATE is a different animal). Write down your exit ramp NOW: "after N attempts or age X, I switch to ___". Aspirants with exit contracts study better, not worse.
Topper consensus across platforms is unanimous: mock tests with ruthless error analysis beat material-hoarding. The syllabus and PYQs are free; a mock series is the only near-mandatory spend.
Most selections happen in attempts 2–4 (community-corroborated estimate; no official data exists). This is also when prep-while-working matters most — a job in hand converts exam failure from catastrophe to inconvenience.
If scores are rising toward cutoffs, one more focused year is rational. If they plateaued, execute the exit: the multi-year prep gap reads badly to private employers (community-corroborated), and every additional locked-in year raises the recovery cost.
Growth is slower than private-sector switching but compounding and near-guaranteed: increments, DA revisions twice a year, promotions, pension architecture (NPS/UPS). The trade you made — ceiling for floor — starts paying here.
This ladder is about the attempt journey, because that is the part nobody maps honestly. In-service growth after joining is slow but certain: time-bound increments (~3%/year), promotions by seniority-cum-merit, and pay-commission revisions roughly every decade.

Every row from official notifications or dated reporting (full citations in Sources). Vacancies swing wildly per cycle — the structural picture: roughly 9.1 lakh central posts sit vacant (Dec 2024, parliamentary reply) yet annual recruitment stays flat against exploding applicant counts.
The refreshing truth about certificates here
None matter. No AWS badge, no paid "SSC-preparation certificate", no diploma changes your rank by one mark. This sector runs entirely on exam scores — which is exactly why it is the fairest door for students without college brand or connections. Redirect every rupee a certificate would cost into a good mock-test series, and every hour into PYQs. (The one exception: the government TEACHING route requires a B.Ed — a degree, not a certificate.)

Application windows are short (SSC CGL 2026: 21 May → 22 Jun). Missing a window costs a full year — track the official calendars, not Telegram forwards. TNPSC publishes an annual planner; use it.
Month 2–4
Prelims / Tier-1
Speed exams: CGL Tier-1 is 100 questions in 60 minutes with 0.50 negative marking (official). Sectional timers mean strategy is trained, not improvised — this is what mocks are for.
Month 5–8
Mains / Tier-2
The real filter. CGL Tier-2 negative marking rises to 1 mark per wrong answer; banking Mains adds descriptive English (practice essays — our Essay Evaluator scores banking-mains prompts). TNPSC inserts the compulsory Tamil paper here.
Month 8–12
Interview / skill tests / DV
GD+interview for PSUs and Group 1; typing/data-entry tests for clerical posts; document verification catches eligibility errors people carried for a year — read the notification’s fine print on day one.
Month 12–18
Merit list → joining
Result to joining can add months (police verification, medicals, allotment). Plan finances for the full 18-month arc — and keep preparing for the next cycle until you hold a joining letter, not a result screenshot.
Eligibility gotchas that end campaigns
Age is counted on a specific cutoff date per notification (CGL 2026: 01-08-2026) — being 3 days over ends it. Post-group age caps differ inside the SAME exam (CGL: 27 for Auditor-level posts, 30 for Inspector/ASO, 32 for JSO). SBI PO counts only Mains appearances toward its 6-attempt cap — but counts them forever. TNPSC’s Tamil paper is qualifying at 40%: fail it and your other papers are not even evaluated. The TN teaching route has a structural trap: no TN-TET open to fresh candidates has been notified since 2022, and 1.35 lakh already-qualified candidates were still awaiting recruitment as of 2023 — verify the door is actually open before you build a plan on it. And category relaxations (SC/ST +5, OBC +3, no TNPSC age cap for reserved categories on most posts) change the math completely — compute YOUR window, not the general one.
