SECTOR ROADMAP · CORE ELECTRICAL (EEE)

Core Electrical Careers — The Honest Roadmap

The branch riding India’s two biggest energy stories — a 500 GW renewables target and the electrification of everything — while its freshers still hear 2010-era advice. The verified picture: GET pay at Siemens/ABB/Schneider-class employers (crowd-reported, badged), the renewables jobs boom and its site-heavy fine print, the PLC-institute trap, and the free government training alternative almost nobody mentions.

What this sector actually is

The workDesign (panels, protection, electrical systems), testing & commissioning, plant/utility operations & maintenance, and project execution across power equipment, utilities, solar/wind EPC and industrial automation.
Who hiresSiemens, ABB, Schneider, Havells and the switchgear/power-equipment majors; private utilities (Tata Power, Adani Electricity — actively hiring GETs for smart-metering/distribution); solar EPC companies; automation integrators. PSU/discom government doors run through GATE and state exams — see Govt & PSU.
The macro storyIndia: 288.6 GW renewable capacity installed (MNRE official, 30 Jun 2026) against a 500 GW non-fossil 2030 target, with ~50 GW/year being bid out. CEEW–NRDC (June 2026) projects 44+ lakh clean-energy jobs from the buildout — the branch’s demand story is genuinely funded.
The fine printMost of those projected jobs are construction/installation/O&M phase — site-heavy, project-state-located (Gujarat/Rajasthan/MP), many at technician grade. The design-office slice is real but small; enter the boom knowing which slice you are joining.
The honest one-linerA branch with real macro demand and modest entry pay, where the biggest career lever is choosing your slice deliberately: utility O&M stability, EPC project intensity, automation depth, or the exam route — each with different lives attached.

How to read the numbers on this page

All GET pay is crowd-reported (Glassdoor samples noted; one official Tata Power posting figure survives only in secondary recaps and is labelled accordingly). Renewables capacity numbers are official MNRE data; jobs projections are independent think-tank studies, cited as projections. One aggregator warning from our sweep: company-wide averages on some salary sites skew to senior profiles — we use fresher-specific cuts only.

Who should NOT pick core electrical

  • You assume "electrical = desk design job". The volume of fresher absorption is plant O&M (rotational shifts, including nights — a standard listed requirement) and site execution; design offices are the smaller, senior-skewed slice.
  • You would sign up for the ₹25–45k PLC-institute promise. Documented reality: private "PLC/SCADA with 100% placement" courses place freshers at the same ₹2.5–5 LPA they would get anyway. The skill matters; the institute paper does not (free-to-cheap routes below).
  • You need metro postings. The renewables buildout hires where the sun and land are — Khavda, Rajasthan, MP. Utility and plant roles sit where the assets sit. Metro-based electrical careers exist (design consultancies, automation firms) but are the minority and more competitive.
  • You are drifting toward the third-party contract layer. Staffing-firm "off-roll engineer, 6-month contract" deployment is a documented structural layer in this sector — real work, weak ladder. Treat such offers as bridges with exit plans, not careers.
  • You want the fastest possible salary growth. The EEE-to-IT drift exists for a reason (no credible percentage exists — we checked — but the direction is universal). If maximum pay velocity is the goal, the honest comparison is our IT-services and Data & AI roadmaps, both open to EEE grads.

Is core electrical actually your fit? Answer honestly

Each question comes from a documented reason freshers regret this branch. Pass all of them and the sector rewards you; fail one and read the alternative before you commit.

1. Are you fine if your first job is plant O&M or site execution, not desk design?

The volume of fresher absorption is plant O&M (rotational shifts, including nights) and site work; design offices are the smaller, senior-skewed slice.

2. Will you skip the ₹25–45k "PLC/SCADA 100% placement" institute promise?

Documented outcomes from such courses cluster at the same ₹2.5–5 LPA an ordinary fresher gets. The skill matters; the institute paper does not.

3. Can you post out to asset towns and sun states (Khavda, Rajasthan, MP)?

Renewables and plant/utility roles sit where the assets and land are. Metro-based electrical careers exist but are the competitive minority.

4. Will you treat any "off-roll, 6-month contract" offer as a bridge with an exit plan, not a career?

Third-party staffing deployment is a documented structural layer here — real work, weak ladder.

5. Are you OK trading fast salary velocity for patience and site tolerance?

This branch pays patience and site tolerance; IT/data pays speed. Both doors are open to EEE grads — deliberate beats drift.

Honest realities — what the evidence says

RealityWhat the evidence shows
The renewables boom is real AND site-shapedOfficial: 288.6 GW installed, 500 GW target, ~50 GW/year bidding. Projected: 44+ lakh jobs (CEEW–NRDC 2026) — but concentrated in construction/installation/O&M phases, in project states, with a large technician-grade share. The design slice is the minority.
Shift work is structuralPlant and utility O&M runs 24/7; rotational-shift willingness is a standard requirement in postings at ₹3.5–6.5L. Factor the roster into the offer, not just the CTC.
The PLC-institute trapPrivate institutes charge ₹25–45k (packages to ₹1L) with universal "100% placement support"; documented outcomes cluster at ₹2.5–5L — the ordinary fresher band. The free/cheap alternatives: NPTI (official, Ministry of Power), free simulators, NPTEL theory at ₹1,000, and authorized OEM training once employed.
The contract layerStaffing firms legally deploy "off-roll" engineers to principal employers on 6-month contracts — a documented, visible market on job boards. Same rule as every core branch: bridges with written exit plans, not careers.
The drift is rational — and optionalNo credible EEE-to-IT percentage exists (we checked; do not trust invented ones). The choice framework: this branch pays patience and site tolerance; IT/data pays speed. Both doors are open to EEE grads — deliberate beats drift in either direction.
