SECTOR ROADMAP · IT SERVICES

IT Services Careers — The Honest Roadmap (TCS, Infosys, Wipro & Co.)

The mass-recruiter path hires more freshers than any other door in Indian tech — and almost every guide about it is a brochure. This one is not. Real tiers and packages (sourced or badged as estimates), the actual 5-year ladder, the certificates worth paying for, bench and bond realities, and who should walk past this sector entirely.

What this sector actually is

The workBuilding, maintaining and supporting software for global client companies — development, testing/QA, infrastructure and application support. You are billed to a client project; which project decides most of your first two years.
Who hires at volumeTCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, Accenture, Capgemini, plus HCLTech, Tech Mahindra, LTIMindtree and mid-tier firms. TCS alone onboarded ~44,000 trainees in FY26.
How you enterOn-campus drives (Aug–Dec of final year) or the off-campus national tests — TCS NQT, Infosys drives via InfyTQ, Wipro Elite NTH, Cognizant GenC, Accenture/Capgemini portals. Off-campus is a first-class route, not a backup.
The honest one-linerA reliable, structured first job with real training and brand value — at a mass-tier salary that has barely moved in a decade, with allocation luck deciding a lot. Great launchpad if you use it as one.

How to read the numbers on this page

Every salary range below carries a badge: “sourced” links to where the figure comes from (an official company page or a dated drive notification); “estimate” means self-reported aggregates (Glassdoor/AmbitionBox-class data) or unconfirmed reports — real-world but not guaranteed. Company CTC is ultimately what your offer letter says; only TCS publishes its fresher CTC on its own website.

Who should NOT pick IT services

  • You already solve LeetCode-medium problems comfortably — you are underpricing yourself here. Aim for product/SDE roles or the premium tiers (TCS Prime, Infosys Specialist Programmer) at minimum; the mass tier will bury that skill on a support project.
  • You need ₹8L+ from year one to justify your education loan. Only the premium tiers pay that, they are a small fraction of intake, and upgrade paths after joining are slow and uncertain.
  • You cannot accept allocation risk: your first project may be application support with night shifts, in a technology you did not choose, in a city you did not choose — and saying no is career-limiting in year one.
  • You expect raises for loyalty. In-company increments run single-digit; the market-documented pattern is that meaningful pay growth in this sector comes from switching companies around years 2–4 (or from clearing internal premium-tier exams).
  • You are choosing it as a "safe default" while actually wanting government service, higher studies, or a non-tech career — the 1–2 year service agreements and slow first years make it an expensive parking spot.

Entry designations — the tiers, honestly

Mass tier — Trainee Engineer

TCS Ninja · Infosys SE · Wipro Elite · Cognizant GenC · Accenture ASE · Capgemini Analyst

₹3.4 – 4.5 LPAsourced
TCSInfosysWiproCognizantAccentureCapgemini

Months of structured training with pass-or-exit assessments, then allocation to a client project — development if you are lucky, support/testing if the business needs it. The volume door: most of the ~40,000+ yearly TCS intake enters here.

First skills: One language properly (Python/Java) · SQL · Aptitude speed · Written + spoken English

Coding-premium tier

TCS Digital · Infosys DSE · Wipro Turbo · Cognizant GenC Next

₹6.25 – 7.6 LPAsourced
TCSInfosysWiproCognizant

Same companies, same test — a higher cutoff and a real coding round. Better projects on average and roughly double the mass-tier pay. This is the tier a prepared Tier-2/3 student should actually target.

First skills: DSA to easy-medium level · Advanced aptitude · Pseudocode fluency · One framework basics

Elite tier

TCS Prime · Infosys Specialist/Power Programmer (SP L1–L3)

₹9 – 21 LPAsourced
TCSInfosysCognizant (GenC Pro)

Product-grade interviews inside a services company: multi-hour coding assessments, DSA depth, sometimes system-design basics. A small fraction of intake — but it exists, it is real, and it is won on preparation, not college brand.

First skills: DSA medium-hard · Competitive programming · Projects with depth · System design basics

QA / Testing & Support tracks

Test Engineer · Support Engineer — often assigned, sometimes chosen

₹3.4 – 4.5 LPAestimate
All sixMid-tier firms

A large share of mass-tier freshers land here regardless of preference. Honest take: manual testing and L1 support teach discipline but stagnate fast — plan your exit ramp (automation testing + ISTQB, or an internal switch) from month one.

First skills: SQL · Testing fundamentals · ISTQB syllabus · Scripting basics

Titles differ per company (ASE at TCS, System Engineer at Infosys, Project Engineer at Wipro, GenC/Programmer Analyst Trainee at Cognizant, ASE at Accenture, Analyst at Capgemini) but the tier structure is the same everywhere: a mass tier, a coding-premium tier, and an elite tier decided by the same test.

The first five years — ladder and real pay

Year 0–1Trainee (ASE / SE / Project Engineer / PAT)
₹3.4 – 4.5 LPAsourced
Training-exam survivalOne stack end-to-endCorporate communication

Training assessments are real exams with real consequences — Infosys terminated roughly 700 trainees at Mysuru in 2025 for failing them after three attempts. Treat training like a semester you cannot repeat.

Year 1–3Engineer (Systems Engineer / SSE / Programmer Analyst)
₹4.2 – 6.5 LPAestimate
A framework properlyCloud fundamentals (one cert)Client-domain knowledge

First promotion is largely time-bound, and annual increments run ~6–11% (TeamLease 2025-26 primer). This is where you quietly build the skills the year-3 decision needs.

Year 3–5Senior Engineer (Sr. Engineer / Technology Analyst / Associate)
₹5.5 – 8.5 LPAestimate
Module ownershipMentoring juniorsInterview readiness

The documented switch window: staying earns single-digit hikes, while switching companies at 2–4 years of experience typically earns 30–50% (community-corroborated estimate). Deciding NOT to interview at year 3 is also a decision.

Year 5–7Lead (Tech Lead / IT Analyst / Consultant)
₹10 – 15 LPAestimate
Team leadershipArchitecture exposureClient management

Two honest paths run through year 5: technical lead inside services, or the product-company switch made earlier. Both are fine — drifting into year 5 without choosing either is the trap.

Titles vary per firm; bands are self-reported aggregates unless badged sourced. No company publishes its internal ladder — this is reconstructed from employee-sourced data (fact-checked 2026-07-19) and should be read as typical, not guaranteed.

Certificates — verified against the issuing bodies (19 Jul 2026)

Cost: US$100Validity: 3 yearsFree alternative: AWS Skill Builder “Cloud Practitioner Essentials” (free course)

The cheapest widely-recognised cloud badge. Services firms staff client projects partly on certified headcount — this one genuinely moves you off support lists.

Verified against issuer: 2026-07-19

Cost: US$150Validity: 3 yearsFree alternative: AWS Skill Builder free exam-prep tier

The single most-requested cloud certification in services staffing. Do it after CCP, ideally in year 1–2 when the company may reimburse it.

Verified against issuer: 2026-07-19

Cost: ~₹3,691 (India; official page prices by country)Validity: Does not expireFree alternative: Free MS Learn path + Microsoft Virtual Training Day attendance often yields a full exam-fee voucher

Worth holding, not worth paying for — attend a Virtual Training Day and take it on the voucher. As a paid purchase it is a weak signal on its own.

Verified against issuer: 2026-07-19

Cost: ~₹4,865 (India)Validity: Renew every 12 months (free online renewal assessment)Free alternative: Free MS Learn AZ-104 path (exam itself has no free route)

Strong for infrastructure/cloud-ops tracks inside services firms; skip if you are targeting development roles.

Verified against issuer: 2026-07-19

Situational
Cost: US$125 (renewal US$75)Validity: 3 yearsFree alternative: Google Cloud Skills Boost learning path (free tier)

Take it only if your unit or target project is GCP-aligned — AWS/Azure badges travel further in Indian services staffing.

Verified against issuer: 2026-07-19

Cost: ~₹5,664 (Pearson VUE centre, incl. GST)Validity: LifetimeFree alternative: Official free sample papers + Test Automation University courses

If you land (or choose) the QA track, this is the recognised credential — cheapest route is direct via ITB. Never touch the “proxy exam” services sold online; companies treat that as fraud.

Verified against issuer: 2026-07-19

NPTEL certification courses

NPTEL (IITs/IISc via SWAYAM)

Worth it
Cost: Course free; proctored exam ₹1,000Validity: No expiryFree alternative: The course itself is free to audit — the exam fee is the only cost

Best price-to-signal ratio in India: proctored, IIT-branded, and recognised by services recruiters. Two or three relevant NPTEL certs beat any paid bootcamp certificate.

Verified against issuer: 2026-07-19

Cost: ~US$245Validity: No expiryFree alternative: Oracle MyLearn free Java content + NPTEL Programming in Java

Respected but ~₹20k+ — poor value before joining. If you land a Java-heavy project, take it in year 1–2 when the company will often fund it.

Verified against issuer: 2026-07-19

Paid “full-stack developer” bootcamp certificates (₹30k–₹1.5L)

Private institutes

Skip
Cost: ₹30,000 – ₹1,50,000Validity:Free alternative: A GitHub portfolio of real projects + free/cheap structured courses

The certificate itself carries no recruiter weight in 2026 — evaluators want demonstrable projects. Pay for structured learning only if you know you will finish it; never pay for the paper.

How a hiring year actually flows

Jan – Jul (pre-final year)

Build the base

Aptitude speed, one language properly, and the premium-tier decision: if you want Digital/Prime-class offers, DSA work starts NOW, not in the placement season.

Feb – Mar & Aug – Sep

Off-campus national test windows

TCS NQT hiring-drive windows (2026 registration ran 18 Feb – 20 Mar); Infosys and Wipro drives run in waves through the year. Register on TCS NextStep / InfyTQ / Superset early — deadlines are strict.

Aug – Dec (final year)

Campus season

Mass recruiters visit in the first wave. Same test families as off-campus — your company-hub drills carry over 1:1.

Test + 2–6 weeks

Interviews & offer

Technical + HR (often a single combined round at this tier). Document verification is strict — see the gotchas below.

Offer + 3–6 months (typical)

Joining… eventually

Offer-to-onboarding gaps of 3–6 months are normal; in the 2022 downturn some Infosys offer-holders waited 2+ years. Never resign anything, or refuse another offer, based on an undated letter of intent.

Eligibility gotchas that reject real candidates

The 60% / 6.0 CGPA rule applies at EVERY level — 10th, 12th, diploma and degree — and 59.9% fails; there is no rounding. TCS permits zero pending backlogs at selection; Wipro allows one at the test but zero at joining. Academic gap limits: 24 months total for TCS and Infosys, 36 for Wipro — with documentation. Re-attempt cooldowns (typically 6 months) mean a careless first attempt costs you a cycle. And background verification is professional: any mismatch between claims and documents is an automatic rejection, sometimes months after joining.

Honest realities — what the evidence says

RealityWhat the evidence shows
BenchBeing unallocated between projects is structural (~15–18% at large firms per industry estimates). TCS now caps bench at 35 business days/year with pay/exit consequences (June 2025 policy, widely reported). Freshers get moved to any open role — including support — to stay billable.
BondsService agreements are real: ~₹50k/1yr at TCS and ₹75k/12mo at Wipro (Wipro’s appears in drive notifications; others are community-reported), ~₹2L/24mo reported at Capgemini. Cognizant officially states it has no bond. Restraint bonds are legally shaky in India, but recovery letters and BGV friction are real — read your agreement before signing.
Pay stagnationMass-tier fresher pay moved from ₹3.25L (2011) to ₹3.5–3.75L (2024) — roughly 15% in 13 years (Mohandas Pai, ex-Infosys CFO, Dec 2024). The band you enter matters more than the increments you will get.
Joining delays2022-23 saw documented 10-month to 2-year onboarding delays at multiple majors; ~1,000 Infosys offer-holders joined in Oct 2024 after a 2+ year wait and a Labour Ministry complaint. Cycles are better now, but plan finances for a 3–6 month gap.
Office mandatesRemote work is over at this tier: TCS runs a 5-day office week with variable pay tied to attendance; Infosys requires ~10 days/month; Wipro moves to 3 days/week from Jan 2026 (all per dated news coverage).
Night shiftsSupport projects run 24×7 and freshers are commonly rostered onto them; allowances are small (community-reported at roughly ₹250–400/night at the majors). Ask about the project’s shift model before accepting an internal move.
Shrinking mass intakeSector fresher hiring fell from ~3.9 lakh (FY22) to ~1.55 lakh (FY24, TeamLease); Wipro hired 7,500 in FY26 and declines to set any FY27 target. Hiring is bifurcating: a small AI-skilled premium tier (Infosys advertises ₹21L entry roles) and a smaller, flat-priced mass tier. The strategy that works: aim premium, hold mass as the floor.

Frequently Asked Questions

As a launchpad, yes — structured training, brand value and a real ladder still make it the widest first door in Indian tech, especially from Tier-2/3 colleges. As a decade-long default, be careful: mass-tier pay is nearly flat since 2011 and intake is shrinking. Join with a plan — target the premium tiers, skill deliberately in years 1–2, and make an intentional stay-or-switch decision around year 3.
