How JoSAA counselling works

Register & fill choices
Register on the JoSAA portal and add institute+branch choices in your order of preference, then lock them.

Seat allotment
Seats are allotted each round by rank, category, quota and your preferences.

Accept & pay
Accept the seat, pay the seat-acceptance fee and upload documents for verification.
4
Float / freeze / slide
Choose to keep upgrading in later rounds (float/slide) or freeze your allotted seat.
Documents for counselling
JEE Main scorecard & admit card: Both are mandatory.
Class 10 & 12 marksheets & certificates: Proof of age and qualification.
Photo ID: Aadhaar / Passport / PAN.
Category / PwD / EWS certificate: If claiming reservation.
Home state vs other state
NITs reserve ~50% seats under the Home-State quota, so your closing rank for a home-state NIT is usually more relaxed than the other-state quota. Factor this into your choice order.
