What this sector actually is
How to read the numbers on this page
No major manufacturer publishes GET CTC — every salary band here is crowd-reported (Glassdoor/Indeed aggregates, some with 100+ samples) and badged estimate. Two documented distortions to ignore: listing-bait claims of "₹8–12 LPA" for standard GETs (evidence supports ₹4–7.5L), and CTC-vs-in-hand: a ₹4 LPA CTC is roughly ₹25–28k/month in hand.
Who should NOT pick core mechanical
- You want tier-1-city desk life from day one. The first 6–12 months of a GET role rotate through the shop floor — shifts (including nights), 6-day weeks, plant townships. If that is a dealbreaker, decide now, not in month three.
- You need fast money. Entry bands (₹3.3–7.5L, estimates) overlap IT services, but core increments and switch-premiums run slower; the mech-to-software pay gap widens over the first five years for equal performers.
- You would enter through the third-party trainee door. ₹12–18k/month "trainee" contracts via staffing agencies (the successor layer to the discontinued NEEM scheme) offer near-zero conversion to permanent roles — a documented trap. If GET offers do not come, our honest advice is the IT/GCC door over the contractor layer.
- You are ignoring the EV skills memo. Climate Policy Initiative (2026) estimates 14% of automotive roles risk obsolescence and 17% need substantial reskilling. Choosing core while refusing the electrification stack is choosing the shrinking half of the sector.
- You cannot get the grades gate. Core campus drives enforce 60–65%+ throughout with no-backlog rules more strictly than IT mass hiring — check each company’s bar before building the plan.

Should you pick core mechanical? A 60-second fit check
Four honest questions built from the anti-fit list above. Answer each the way you actually feel, not the way you think you should. You need every one to pass for core to be a deliberate choice rather than a drift.
1. The first 6–12 months of a GET role rotate through the shop floor — shifts (including nights), 6-day weeks, plant townships. Can you live with that?
This is not a phase you can skip. Deciding now beats quitting in month three.
2. Entry bands (₹3.3–7.5L, estimates) overlap IT services, but core increments and switch-premiums run slower. Are you okay with slower money for the work itself or the EV wave?
The mech-to-software pay gap widens over the first five years for equal performers.
3. The sector documents a real EV skills gap. Will you add the electrification stack (battery systems, power-electronics basics, embedded literacy)?
Only ~30% of EV competencies carry over from ICE; refusing to reskill is choosing the shrinking half.
4. Core campus drives enforce 60–65%+ throughout with strict no-backlog rules. Do you clear that bar?
Verify each company’s current posting — the bar is drive-specific.

Failing here is a signal to choose differently, not to lower your standards. The one door to avoid regardless is the ₹12–18k/month third-party trainee contract.
The doors — with honest numbers
GET at auto OEMs
Tata Motors · Maruti Suzuki · Mahindra · Ashok Leyland
Rotational training across shop floor, quality and assembly before confirmation. The brand-name core start with the widest later options — including the EV programs every OEM is now staffing.
First skills: Manufacturing processes · GD&T · One CAD tool properly · Plant-floor Hindi/local language
GET at EPC / heavy engineering
L&T (Construction/Heavy Engg) · Thermax · Cummins
Project and plant postings, heavier travel, the best-regarded core training systems in the country. L&T hires overwhelmingly on-campus via Campus Engage — get your TPO engaged early.
First skills: Strength of materials (they test it) · Fabrication basics · AutoCAD/SolidWorks
Auto-component & EV suppliers
Bosch · tier-1s · the ACMA ecosystem — where the volume is
The 5-million-worker layer most students ignore while chasing OEM brands. PLI schemes have added 45,000+ jobs; EV suppliers hire for battery-pack, thermal and testing roles where demand outruns supply.
First skills: EV literacy (BMS, motors) · Quality tools (SPC, PPAP) · Embedded basics = premium
The M.Tech premium (PGET)
The documented +₹2–3L path — GATE without the PSU lottery
The quiet arbitrage: two stipended M.Tech years convert a ₹4–6L GET offer into an ₹8.5–11L PGET offer and design/R&D-track access. For design-minded students who miss the top GET brands, often the highest-EV move in core mech.
First skills: GATE ME preparation · A specialization matching the EV wave (thermal/design)

Dassault Systèmes
Cheap, official, and demonstrable in the interview itself — ask your CAD lab about test vouchers before paying anything.
Verified against issuer: 2026-07-19
The one genuinely job-gating credential in this list — for oil & gas / fabrication QC careers specifically. Expensive and experience-linked: plan it for year 1–2 of a fabrication career, not before placement.
Verified against issuer: 2026-07-19
ASQ requires 3 years of on-the-job experience — a fresher literally cannot hold it, and the no-experience local versions carry little hiring weight. Learn the tools, skip the paper until employed.

CAD-institute "master diploma" bundles
CADD Centre / EduCADD-class chains
The software is learnable free on student licenses and interviews test the modeling, not the institute paper. Documented fee sheets show NX-advanced alone at ₹34k — the entire official Dassault cert ladder costs less.

NPTEL (manufacturing / thermal / EV courses)
NPTEL (IITs)
IIT-branded, proctored, ₹1,000 — and NPTEL now runs EV-specific courses that map exactly to the skills gap the sector documents.

Honest realities — what the evidence says
| Reality | What the evidence shows |
|---|---|
| The core-to-IT drift | No official percentage exists (we checked), but the proxies are stark: 18.4% of engineering grads test employable for IT roles versus 7.5% for core (Aspiring Minds lineage data), and IT drives dwarf core drives at most campuses. The drift is rational, not shameful — what matters is deciding, not drifting. |
| The trainee-layer trap | In auto-belt plants, only ~15–20% of the workforce is permanent (documented for Manesar); third-party "trainee" contracts (the successor structures to the discontinued NEEM scheme) pay stipend-level wages for assembly-line hours with no PF/ESI during training and near-zero conversion. A GET offer and a staffing-agency "trainee engineer" offer are different products. |
| CTC vs in-hand | ₹4 LPA CTC ≈ ₹25–28k/month in hand; the ₹15–20k in-hand year is real at ₹2.5–3L trainee offers common in tier-2 suppliers. Budget on in-hand, not CTC. |
| The EV counterweight | ACMA: ₹7.6 lakh crore component industry, $200B trajectory by 2030; SIAM/ASDC: ~2 lakh skilled EV workers needed, adding at double the current rate; 43% of EV skills need new training. The revival is real and skills-gated — exactly the kind of gap an individual student can arbitrage. |
| Design-office reality | Entry "design engineer" postings at small firms pay LESS than plant roles (PayScale entry ~₹2.5L) — the well-paid design track runs through PGET/M.Tech or years of plant credibility first. The design-from-day-one expectation is the branch’s most common disappointment. |

Do this now: claim your first EV-stack credential
The single highest-leverage 15 minutes for a mech student in 2026: open NPTEL, find an EV or manufacturing course that maps to the documented skills gap, and register. It is ₹1,000 proctored, IIT-branded, and it is the exact skill core drives now reward. Then ask your CAD lab about a SolidWorks voucher.
