Read this first — a calling, not a backup plan
Officer entry is a tiny door: roughly 4.5 lakh candidates appear for defence exams, about 15,000 reach the SSB, and only ~400–500 are finally recommended — a ~97% rejection rate at the SSB stage alone, before a strict medical board. It carries a career of postings, family separation and physical risk. People who treat it as a fallback wash out; people who treat it as a calling and prepare for years are who get in. This page is honest about both the prestige and the price.
What this sector actually is
Who should NOT pursue defence officer entry
- You are treating it as a fallback for not getting placed. The ~97% SSB rejection rate and strict medical standards mean it is harder to enter than almost any corporate job — a hedge-the-bet mindset is exactly what the SSB is designed to filter out.
- You cannot accept the life. Postings you do not choose, long family separation, physical hardship and genuine risk are inherent, not incidental. If those are dealbreakers, no salary or prestige offsets them.
- You have a medical condition likely to fail the board. The Armed Forces medical standards are strict and largely non-negotiable (vision, height/weight, and many specific conditions). Check the standards honestly before investing years — a foreseeable medical rejection is a preventable heartbreak.
- You want quick, predictable career progression. Short Service Commission runs 10–14 years with NO pension unless later granted Permanent Commission (which needs 20 years); the pension and full-career security come only to those who go the distance. Understand the SSC-vs-PC distinction before you commit.
- You are not prepared to prepare for years. Clearing CDS/AFCAT plus the SSB typically takes sustained, multi-year preparation and often multiple attempts. Casual attempts against lakhs of committed candidates do not clear.
Is officer entry genuinely for you? — the honest fit check
The SSB exists to detect people who are here as a hedge rather than a calling. Run that check yourself first. All five should be a clear Yes before you invest years.
1. Is this a genuine calling — not a fallback if placements fail?
A hedge-the-bet mindset is exactly what the SSB is designed to reject.
2. Can you accept the life — postings you do not choose, family separation, physical risk?
These are inherent, not incidental. No salary offsets them if they are dealbreakers.
3. Do you meet age & eligibility for at least one route (CDS/AFCAT/INET/TA/NCC)?
Confirm against the CURRENT official notification — bands vary by academy, gender and marital status.
4. Are you confident you meet the strict medical standards?
Vision, height/weight and many specific conditions are largely non-negotiable. A foreseeable medical rejection is preventable heartbreak.
5. Are you prepared to prepare for years, possibly across multiple attempts?
Casual attempts against lakhs of committed candidates do not clear.

This mirrors the antifit above — the one sector where "is this genuinely who I am?" matters more than any salary table.
The graduate entry routes
CDS (Combined Defence Services)
UPSC — IMA/OTA (Army) · INA (Navy) · AFA (Air Force)
The main graduate gateway, twice a year via UPSC. IMA/INA/AFA lead to Permanent Commission; OTA to Short Service Commission (and is the route open to women, non-technical). Age bands 19–25 depending on academy; mostly unmarried.
First skills: CDS written (English/GK/Maths) · SSB preparation · Fitness · Officer-like qualities
AFCAT / INET (Air Force / Navy)
AFCAT flying + ground duty · INET executive/technical
AFCAT feeds flying (needs Physics+Maths at 10+2) and ground-duty technical/non-technical branches; INET feeds Navy executive (graduation), technical (BE/BTech) and education (PG) branches. Distinct exams, same SSB-and-medical gate.
First skills: AFCAT/INET written · SSB · Branch-specific eligibility · Fitness
Territorial Army / NCC Special Entry
TA (part-time officer) · NCC (no written exam)
Two alternative doors: TA lets you serve as an officer alongside a civilian job (a genuine option for the already-employed), and NCC Special Entry rewards years of NCC commitment with a written-exam-free route straight to the SSB.
First skills: (TA) a civilian career + fitness · (NCC) NCC ‘C’ certificate · SSB
Eligibility varies per exam and cycle — always confirm the current official notification. Pay is common across routes once commissioned.
The SSB — five days, honestly
Day 1
Screening
Officer Intelligence Rating + Picture Perception & Discussion. 40–70% of candidates are screened out here alone — the single biggest cut.
Day 2
Psychology
Thematic Apperception, Word Association, Situation Reaction and Self-Description tests — probing your instinctive responses, not rehearsed answers.
Days 3–4
Group Testing (GTO) + Interview
Outdoor group tasks, group discussions, command tasks, plus the personal interview. Tests leadership, teamwork and physical-mental coordination under observation.
Day 5
Conference
The board reviews each candidate and decides recommendations. Of the ~15,000 who reach SSB, only ~400–500 are finally recommended (indicative figures).
After
Medical board → merit
Strict Armed Forces medical standards with no relaxation; temporary-unfit candidates may appeal. Then the final merit list.

Honest realities — what to know before committing
| Reality | The honest picture |
|---|---|
| The odds are severe | ~4.5 lakh appear → ~15,000 reach SSB → ~400–500 recommended (indicative): a ~97% rejection at SSB, before a strict medical. Harder to enter than most corporate jobs — which is exactly why it cannot be a casual fallback. |
| PC vs SSC matters enormously | Permanent Commission = full career to retirement, pension, higher promotion. Short Service Commission = 10–14 years, NO pension unless later granted PC (needs 20 years). Know which you are entering and what happens at the end of an SSC term. |
| Medical rejection is common and final | The Armed Forces medical standards are strict and largely non-negotiable. Many candidates who clear the written and SSB are rejected medically. Check the standards against your own health BEFORE investing years. |
| The pay is genuinely strong | Officer basic ₹56,100 + MSP ₹15,500 + allowances civilians never get (field, kit, ration, flying) puts a new officer’s gross well above most fresher civilian jobs — plus pension for those who serve the qualifying period. The compensation is real. |
| It is a life, not a job | Uncontrolled postings, family separation, physical risk — inherent, not incidental. The officers who thrive chose it as a calling. This is the one sector in the guide where "is this genuinely who you are?" matters more than any salary table. |
Funnel figures are indicative (coaching-sourced); officer pay is anchored to 7th CPC scales. For branch-by-branch depth, prep timelines and life-after-service, see the full Career Roadmap.
