Internships — The Real Entry Channel Nobody Told You to Prioritize

For a lot of students — especially at product companies — the internship IS the front door, and the final-year application is the backup. This guide covers when to intern, how the PPO conversion actually works, the government’s PM Internship Scheme (with its honest uptake reality), and how to spot the fake internships that now target students at scale.

Why internships matter more than you were told

New-grad hiring at big tech has fallen by more than half since 2019, and companies increasingly hire juniors by CONVERTING interns rather than recruiting fresh — which makes the internship the real entry channel, not an optional extra. If nobody in your circle told you to start applying for internships in second and third year, that is exactly the information gap this guide exists to close. Intern early, intern deliberately.

How to actually use internships

1

1 · Start in 2nd / 3rd year

Technical internships target pre-final-year students; the summer cycle runs May–July with applications opening around January–March. Applying "when I am in final year" is often too late for the conversion path — the earlier internship is the one that becomes a job.

2

2 · Target conversion, not just experience

A summer internship’s real prize is the pre-placement offer (PPO). Average conversion runs ~20–25%, with top-tier firms (Flipkart/TCS/Google-class) reaching ~50–60% (estimates; big-tech rates vary widely by team). Perform like the offer depends on it — because it does.

3

3 · Use the legitimate platforms

The AICTE National Internship Portal (internship.aicte-india.org, free, NEP-credit-mapped), Internshala, LinkedIn, and company career pages. AICTE-approved B.Tech programs now expect internships across the degree, and diploma students face a mandatory ~6-month industrial internship from 2025-26.

4

4 · Consider the PM Internship Scheme — with eyes open

A government-backed 12-month internship in top-500 companies at ₹5,000/month + a ₹6,000 joining grant. Genuinely useful for eligible students who cannot land a private internship — but read the honest reality below before building a plan on it.

5

5 · Convert the internship into proof

Even without a PPO, a real internship gives you shipped work, a reference, and interview material that beats any certificate. Document what you built — it becomes the strongest line on a fresher resume.

The PM Internship Scheme (PMIS) — the facts

Stipend & benefits₹5,000/month (₹4,500 government via direct benefit transfer + ₹500 company CSR), plus a one-time ₹6,000 grant on joining, plus PMJJBY + PMSBY insurance with premiums paid by the government.
Who is eligibleIndian citizens aged 21–24, having completed secondary/higher-secondary, ITI, diploma or a graduate degree. NOT for IIT/IIM/IISER graduates, CA/CMA/MBBS holders, or postgraduates. Family income must not exceed ₹8 lakh/year, and no family member may hold a permanent government job.
How to applyAadhaar eKYC on the portal; apply to up to 5 internships per cycle; AI-based matching to companies (selected by their 3-year average CSR spend).

The honest reality of PMIS (before you count on it)

The scheme has struggled badly with uptake. In its rounds, only about 1 in 5 selected candidates accepted their offer, roughly 41% of those who joined dropped out before completing, and only around 1.5% of the allocated budget had been spent as of late 2025. The government’s own stated reasons: reluctance to relocate, the 12-month tenure feeling too long, and low interest in the offered roles — and a relaunch with relaxed terms is expected in 2026. Treat PMIS as a genuine option if you are eligible and it fits, but not as a reliable primary plan; a private internship with a real conversion path is usually the stronger bet.

Frequently Asked Questions

In your second and third year — earlier than most students realize. Technical internships target pre-final-year students, the summer cycle runs May–July with applications opening around January–March, and crucially, the internship that converts into a job is usually the pre-final-year one, not a final-year stint. Because big-tech new-grad hiring has more than halved since 2019 and companies now hire juniors largely by converting interns, treating internships as the main entry channel — and starting early — is one of the highest-leverage moves you can make.
