CLASS 6 FOUNDATION PLAN · 2026-27

Samacheer Kalvi Class 6 Study Plan 2026-27 — the Foundation Year

A gentle month-by-month plan for Class 6, built on the Tamil Nadu school calendar — Quarterly, Half-Yearly and Annual. One simple idea: keep a calm daily rhythm, read every day, and stay comfortable with all five subjects. No pressure, just good habits that last to Class 10.

How to use this roadmap

The dates follow the Tamil Nadu school calendar (June reopening, Quarterly around September, Half-Yearly around December, Annual around April). This is a foundation year, so keep it light — the goal is a steady habit and comfort with the subjects, not exam-style pressure. Shift topics to match your school’s teaching order.

The Class 6 year at a glance

Term 1 · June – September (to Quarterly)— Settle into middle school and build a calm daily rhythm

Jun – Jul

Start the year gently

  • Open the Term I textbooks in every subject
  • Begin a ten-minute daily reading habit in Tamil and English
  • Maths: do every textbook exercise, a little each day
  • Set the light weekly rhythm below from the first week

Aug – Sep

Ease toward the Quarterly

  • Finish the Term I books across subjects
  • Quarterly exam (around September): a friendly first checkpoint
  • Talk through any topic that felt hard — no pressure, just clarity
  • Keep the reading and maths habit going through the exam
Term 2 · October – December (to Half-Yearly)— Grow confidence and keep the habit through the middle of the year

Oct – Nov

Steady, curious progress

  • Work through the Term II textbooks
  • Keep the daily reading streak alive through the festival season
  • Science: try the simple activities in the book and ask questions
  • Social Science: use the maps and pictures little and often

December

Half-Yearly checkpoint

  • Half-Yearly exam (around December): a gentle mid-year review
  • Revise from the Term I and II books, calmly and in short spells
  • Note any subject that needs a little extra reading — then move on
Term 3 · January – April (to Annual)— Finish Term III and end the year comfortable across all five subjects

Jan – Feb

Complete the year’s books

  • Work through the Term III textbooks across subjects
  • Keep reading daily and doing maths exercises little and often
  • Revisit anything from earlier terms that still feels shaky

Mar – Apr

The Annual exam

  • A light revision pass across the Term I, II and III books
  • Annual examinations (around April): the friendly year-end review
  • Rest well and carry the good habits into Class 7

Anchored to the TN school calendar and the Samacheer Kalvi Term I/II/III structure. This is a low-pressure foundation year — confirm exact 2026-27 exam dates with your school.

The weekly rhythm

Mon – Fri
  • School and homework first
  • 20–30 min: maths or the day’s hardest subject (work the exercises)
  • 10 min: reading in Tamil or English — the habit of the year
  • A quick look back at what was learned in school that day
Saturday
  • 45–60 min: revisit the week’s topics and any that felt tricky
  • 20 min: a story or reading of choice — reading for pleasure counts
  • Free time to play — Class 6 should stay fun
Sunday
  • 30 min: a light look back over the week
  • A few quick daily-quiz questions for fun, not pressure
  • Rest and family time — protect it

Total: about an hour of calm study on school days. Class 6 is about rhythm and reading, not long hours.

FirstGrade tools for the foundation year

For parents — what to check, monthly

The reading habitAsk each month: "is the ten-minute daily reading actually happening?" — it is the most valuable habit of the year
Maths practiceCheck that exercises are being worked, not just read — maths comfort now prevents struggle later
Comfort, not marksAt this age, look for genuine understanding and enjoyment rather than test scores
A calm rhythmA short, steady daily routine matters more than long study sessions; protect play time too
CuriosityEncourage questions in Science and connect Social Science lessons to everyday life

Start the daily habit today

A few fun questions a day builds the study habit that lasts all the way to Class 10 — free, and never any pressure.
